When most think of domestic violence, they automatically thing about physical abuse. Sadly, domestic violence is only a umbrella of abuse types such as emotional abuse, financial abuse, digital abuse, sexual abuse, and even reproductive coercion abuse. Domestic violence doesn’t look the same in every relationship because every relationship is different. Possessive and controlling behaviors don’t always appear overnight, but rather emerge and intensify as the relationship grows, and most relationships in fact never show signs in the early stages. The National Domestic Violence Hotline defines abuse as , "A repetitive pattern of behaviors to maintain power and control over an intimate partner. These are behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want. Abuse includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation." If someone you love or know is being abused, it can be so difficult to know what to do and how to act, it is a complication situation but it is always ok to ask questions and encourage them to seek help via law enforcement, counseling, or abuse centers that provide a path to safety.
