Radio One was founded by Cathy Hughes in 1980 with the purchase of DC station WOL-AM for $995,000. The unique factor of this purchase was that  money was still needed to operate the station and with much determination Ms. Hughes knocked on the doors of 32 banks where every male loan officer said no and turned her down. But, on the 33rd try, a Puerto Rican female loan officer accepted and said yes to Ms. Hughes! Radio One was based on programming geared towards African American politics, culture, and lifestyle aspects. In the purchase of WMMJ, Radio One then began to incorporate more music within the syndication.
